Welcome to 2009, like 13 days late. I know but I have something great I would like to share. 10 blogging tips for 2009:
Stop sucking up. Sucking up to other bloggers, especially "bigger" or "alist" bloggers will get you no where. All it does it makes you feel important for a while and makes their blogs even bigger. If you get something out of it then great, but dont just follow and support someone because everyone else is doing it.
Leave comments because you want to. I guess people still do the comment thing. Dont leave comments unless you want to be part of the conversation. If you leave comments then really mean them and make them because you want to participate.
Write content I used to wonder why when i have such a great blog there were no people coming. You actually have to keep on writing content for people to come to your blog. No content, no visitors. If you want to be found for a certain keyword then you actually have to use that keyword. Obvious but not for many.
Trackback to your own articles Who said trackbacking to your own articles is wrong? Crap man, trackbacking is relevant to search engines and to humans. It's a win win.
Stop following famous bloggers Goes with point one, but seriously, why follow everyone and do everything they say because they are famous. It does NOT mean you will get there by doing exactly the same. Be original.
Stop following the crowd I used to read all that blogging tips and how to get traffic and all that crap. Just follow your self and aim for goals instead of messing around trying to find the "best" way to drive traffic. Blog and they will come.
Reach a goal in blogging Successful blogging is not about how many rss readers you have. Rss readers is another fail anyway. Your blog should have a goal, following that goal will keep you going after that which matters instead of following endless blogging tips.
Spell check Yeah you got me on this one. But spell check because it counts.
Stop being cocky So you make money, or you have 100 000 rss subscribers. Who cares? You are still just a drop in a over filled up bucket. Being cocky just shows that you dont know there is a world out there bigger than you.
Spy on competitors So cnn gets more traffic. Spy on em. You can only learn from those that are where you want to be, but dont become those that are where you want to be, be unique but learn from the ways they do things. And lastly, stop worrying so much. Happy 2009.
Hmmm, is this aimed at any specific bloggers? :p
I was following 3 blogs (for about 3 weeks) in which the bloggers always brag about how much money they make from blogging and participating in ego-stroking endeavours and decided last week that I'm tired of following arrogant cocky people.
Also wiped more than half of my twitter followings as they weren't brining any real value into my life except for stroking their own egos.
Good tip on the feed (thanks), going to put mine in summary mode now!
@saaleha Goals are important. Keeps the blog going in a direction :)
@Re@PeR hehe, no, did not aim at anyone specific.
Thanks for commenting :)
Love the list. I didn't actually know that it was "wrong" to trackback to your own posts. LOL I do it all the time.
As for the famous bloggers comment, I have to agree... I removed all blogs from my reader where they didn't even bother to respond to my comments ever... there's no point following people like that.
@Jeanette Yeah it sucks when you always give input into a blog and they never respond. Blogging should be a conversation :)
I especially like the one about reaching blogging goals.
When I'm stuck for thought, I often go back to my raison d'
